Spike Lee to Write and Direct ‘She’s Gotta Have It’ for Showtime

Spike Lee will be returning to his debut feature film, She’s Gotta Have It, with a new television series.

Showtime is currently in development for a half-hour series that updated the feature film.

SPike Lee is set to write and direct the television series. According to Deadline, “the project is taking a new, contemporary look at the characters and will explore Lee’s unique and provocative points of view about race, gender, sexuality, relationships, and the gentrification in Brooklyn”.

Spike Lee made a breakthrough in his career with She’s Gotta Have It, he shot the movie in 12 days with a budget of $175,000.  The movie featured Tracy Camilla Johns as a sexy independent women who juggles three men at a time. The movie ended up making $7 million dollars at the United States box office and helped bring in more independent feature films in the 1980s.
