Rio Olympics: 5 Crimes They Don’t Want You to Know

Date:

Rio Summer Olympics 2016 is off to a rough start.

Summer Olympics are finally here but, that doesn’t it the Olympic Games are not filled with controversies, crime, and murder. Put the highly infectious Zika virus and the doping scandal, there have been several security scares just days after the Olympic Games have begun. For example, fans have to wait for hours at security checkpoints before entering venues, while shootings and alleged bomb scares have plagued the city. Security is so tight, that on the first day fans missed entire events and athletes competed with no one in the stands, according to The Wrap.

According Huffington Post, “organizers blamed a lack of coordination between security personnel, including the police, Games staff and private security firms.”

Olympic Games spokesman Mario Andrada promised swift action to improve the situation by saying, “We apologize for everybody standing in line outside the venues. Within the next hours we will be in much better shape.”

In addition, tourists attending the opening ceremony at Maracana stadium found out how bad violent crime was when they found a body of a young man shot dead in the street by police. And this is not an isolated incident – a middle-aged Brazilian woman was killed during a robbery, a murder took place during an attempted carjacking, stray bullets nearly hit athletes and fans at an equestrian event and several Swedish tourists were kidnapped by a gun-wielding man.

While trying to protect the citizens, fans, and athletes of the Summer Olympics 2016, the country is forced to combat the spread and transmission of the Zika virus. In fact, leading health experts said the ongoing Zika virus outbreak in Brazil is so dangerous, that the games should either be moved or delayed.

Fans took to Twitter to address the Rio controversies on Twitter with the hashtag :
