Oregon Shooting: 10 Things You Should Know About Chris Mintz

Date:

Here are 10 things you should know about the Oregon shooting hero, Chris Mintz.

Chris Mintz is the heroic army veteran who put his life on the line to confront the gunman at Umpqua Community College. He recently spoken out to the other victims of the brutal massacre. What a true American hero.

Chris Mintz, 30, risked his life to attempt the alleged gunman Chris Harper Mercer, 27, during the gruesome shooting at Umpqua Community College on October 1, getting shot seven times in the process. The hero is alive and well, and has shared his well wishes to the other victims of the community college massacre.

“Hope the others injured and their families are doing well, goodnight for me,” Chris wrote in a Facebook post on October 2.

It’s another show of compassion for the Army veteran and father who put himself first before the lives of his classmates to confront the Chris Harper Mercer, the man who allegedly tried to end their innocent lives. Though he’s still sitting in a hospital bed recovering from seven gunshot wounds, and two broken legs, he’s compelled to check on the others who have suffered.

For those who are friends and family members of Chris Mintz, they were unsurprised to see him act so fearlessly in the face of danger. A former soldier raising an autistic son, Chris is reportedly a selfless individual, who held the door of his classroom shut to block the gunman from entering, even though he was being shot through the door. Once the shooter entered, he begged him not to shoot again. Not to mention it was Chris Mintz son’s sixth birthday. It is incredibly heartbreaking to know that he had to go through this, and so moving that his thoughts were only about his little son.

“We’re just so thankful he’s alive; none of the bullets hit any major organs,” Chris’ aunt, Wendy Kay Mintz, told PEOPLE. “Both his legs were hit and broken. He was shot in the stomach, the back and his hand. One bullet traveled down his spine, and became lodged in his hip. The doctors are just going to leave it there.”

It’s sickening, cowardly act that is just so senseless. These precious innocent lives were taken just because of one deranged man. Alleged shooter Chris Harper Mercer posted a manifesto the night before the shooting outlining his allegiance to Satan and a number of sickening thoughts.

Recently, thousands of people have signed a petition to award him the Presidential Medal of Freedom, which is the highest honor that can be bestowed upon a U.S. Civilian.

“I am recommending Mr. Chris Mintz for the Presidential Medal of Freedom for his actions taken on 1 October 2015 during the shootings at the Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, Oregon. Mr. Mintz, a Veteran, continues to display the values of the United States military by his actions to alert others of the danger and then to endanger himself while delaying the attacker to allow time for others to escape. Mr. Mintz positively displayed the values of loyalty, duty, respect, honor, integrity, personal courage, and self-sacrifice to attempt to save as many of his fellow citizens as possible. I believe that awarding Mr. Mintz the Presidential Medal of Freedom will hold him up as a strong example to the rest of America that one person can make a difference.”

The petition gathered nearly 6,000 signatures. The total number needed for Mintz to recieve the medal is 100,000. Hopefully, the petition will ultimately be successful before its expiration date of November 1. No doubt, President Obama would feel it proper for Mintz to receive this highest of honors.
