Is MMA Too Dangerous? MMA Fighter Dies 3 Days After Fight

Date:

MMA fighter dies after fight and UFC cancels Ultimate Fighter casting call.

Should MMA fighting be allowed on TV?

Tragedy has hit the MMA world as 28-year-old fighter JOao Carvalho died in a hospital just three days after suffering a TKO loss during a Total Extreme Fighting match in Dublin. According to Ireland’s minister of sport Michael Ring, the country will have to regulate MMA in the country following the death. Apparently, Carvalho became sick just 20 minutes after the loss and never fully recovered.

Conor McGregor, who trains alongside Carvalho’s opponent Charlie Ward, posted the following on Facebook.

Terrible news regarding Joao Carvalho.
To see a young man doing what he loves, competing for a chance at a better life, and then to have it taken away is truly heartbreaking.
We are just men and women doing something we love in the hope of a better life for ourselves and our families. Nobody involved in combat sports of any kind wants to see this. It is such a rare occurrence that I don’t know how to take this.
I was ringside supporting my teammate, and the fight was so back and forth, that I just can’t understand it.

My condolences go out to Joao’s family and his team. Their man was a hell of a fighter and will be sorely missed by all.
Combat sport is a crazy game and with the recent incident in boxing and now this in MMA, it is a sad time to be a fighter and a fight fan.
It is easy for those on the outside to criticise our way of living, but for the millions of people around the world who have had their lives, their health, their fitness and their mental strength all changed for the better through combat, this is truly a bitter pill to swallow. We have lost one of us.

I hope we remember Joao as a champion, who pursued his dream doing what he loved, and show him the eternal respect and admiration he deserves.

Rest in peace, Joao.

But, it seriously begs the question – is MMA too dangerous? Should MMA even be allowed to aired on television?

UFC cancels Ultimate Fighter Casting Call

This news comes just days after UFC cancelled an open casting call for their 24th season of The Ultimate Fighter, with the winner receiving a Flyweight title shot. The UFC then issued the following statement to Wrestling inc. but, without a clear explanation as to why they have decided to pull the plug on the popular series.

“UFC® announced today that the open casting call for the upcoming season of The Ultimate Fighter® originally scheduled for April 25 in Las Vegas has been canceled. UFC apologizes for any inconveniences this cancellation has caused.

More information about the next season of the show will be made available in the weeks to come.”

Study: MMA is safer than Boxing…

According to a recent study, MMA is actually less dangerous than boxing. Researchers at the University of Alberta’s Sather Sports Medicine Clinic discovered that while MMA fighters are more likely than boxers to experience minor but visible injuries like bruises or contusions, they are less likely to receive the injuries that matter long-term in one’s health; things like concussions, head trauma, unconsciousness, eye and facial injuries and broken bones. “Most of the blood you see in mixed martial arts is from bloody noses or facial cuts; it doesn’t tend to be as severe, but looks a lot worse than it actually is,” Dr. Shelby Karpman, a sports medicine physician and the study’s lead author, said in a press release.

But, just because something is safer than boxing doesn’t mean that it’s okay.

Study: One concussion can kill or cause permanent brain damage.

Currently, the NFL is facing major scrutiny following a study that revealed a particular type of head trauma only found in football and other physical sports due to concussions. According to a study, “there is great risk if a player suffers a second direct or indirect blow to the brain when post-concussion syndrome is still present. That could lead to rapid brain swelling and even death.”

Is it worth it?

At the end of the day people enjoy violence. That’s why Las Vegas stadiums are filled for boxing matches, football is the most popular sport in America and MMA is quickly becoming America’s second favorite past time. But, how many people have to die before it’s no longer  okay?
