Empire Destroys ‘The Walking Dead’ to Become Most Tweeted Show

Date:

Empire beats out ‘The Walking Dead’ to become the most tweeted about show on television.

The Walking Dead was the No. 1 show in just about every demographic, category, and social network. So, when a new show comes around is slowly destroying the records of the most watched show on television, it catches the attention of nearly everyone.

Most recently, ‘Empire’ became the most tweeted about show.

From The Wrap:

Whether or not Fox needed another Nielsen metric to boast about its booming “Empire,” it got one: the Lee Daniels hip-hop soap opera has surpassed “The Walking Dead” to average the most tweets per episode of any series on TV this season.

The report goes on to say that the show sees an average of 451,270 tweets per episode. The Walking Dead has averaged 444,029 tweets per episode. Which is not hard to believe considering the number of slow scenes on The Walking Dead since the mid-season premiere.

But, why is this so important? Well, in the last few years Twitter has become a major tool for networks to understand what is trending and what scenes “work”. In addition, if this many people are talking about Empire online while it is airing, it’s safe to assume that there are millions of other people not tweeting because they are too interested in what’s going on.

As we pointed out yesterday, the show’s latest episode became the most watched with ratings of 14.92 million viewers overall. The episode also matched its series 18-49 high score of 5.8 last week. Given current trends, next week’s two-hour finale should be the series’ most viewed episode and may even steal The Walking Dead’s ranking as the number one show on television.
