Catfish Creators Are Afraid They May Never Get Paid

Date:

The creators of Catfish are suing Relativity Media because they are afraid they may never get paid.

Relativity Media has officially filed bankruptcy. Since the company has filed bankruptcy, a number of their shows are up for sale including MTV’s Catfish.

However, producers in Hollywood are beginning to question the legality of a company being able to sell a show without paying their current bills first.

From Variety:

Sources close to Relativity say that the only amounts the company owes to the “Catfish” makers is manageable and that those bills have accrued only following the July 30 bankruptcy filing. They expect that bill to be paid once the sale of the company is completed and said production of the show will continue uninterrupted.

The owners of Catfish Picture Company protest in the filing that they did not get all of the required quarterly reports from Relativity following the release of the 2010 documentary,  “Catfish,” which formed the basis for the TV show. Because of the lack of documentation, the producer alleges it “cannot accurately determine the amounts it is owed.”

Catfish is the most recent television show to enter the bid. The creators of Catfish have requested that the Bankruptcy court deny Relativity Media’s ability to sell the show Catfish to another buyer until all of the bills/production expenses have been paid.

The creators of Catfish even claim that they never received the quarterly reports from Relativity Media.
