A Female ‘Ghostbusters’? ‘Bridesmaids’ director Paul Feig is Currently in Talks to Reboot Ghostbusters series With Sony

Are you ready for a female Ghostbusters? Actor and filmmaker Paul Feig (Bridesmaids) is currently in discussion to write, produce and direct a female reboot of the Ghostbusters series.

Ivan Reitman, who directed the original 1984 Ghostbusters movie and the 1989 sequel, was originally planned to direct Ghostbusters 3. But, he later stepped down from the project in March 14th.

Reitman helped co-write the script for the latest film and had to change the storyline when the original actor Harold Ramis passed away. Now, executives at Sony Pictures are hoping to bring Bridesmaids director Paul Feig to fill in Ivan Reitman‘s shoes.

According to TheWrap, Feig is planning on re-writing the script for a female-focused version of the classic movie franchise.

There is no word if Harold Ramis‘ co-stars Dan Aykroyd and Bill Murray will return to the Ghostbusters reboot.

Reports suggest that Melissa McCarthy and Emma Stone will join the cast of the new Ghostbuster’s movie due to the director’s relationship with the actress.

Should Feig come onboard, the question would likely turn to casting, in which Melissa McCarthy’s name would inevitably come up, given her relationship with the director. McCarthy became the breakout star of Feig’s “Bridesmaids” and went on to work him on “The Heat” and his upcoming Fox movie “Spy.”

Emma Stone, who passed on an earlier incarnation of the project when it was being developed as “Ghostbusters 3.” With starring roles in “Zombieland,” ‘Easy A,” the upcoming Cameron Crowe film and the “Amazing Spider-Man” series, Stone is a favorite among Sony executives, and it’s possible the studio may approach her down the line.

Paul Feig has been a leading director for female comedic movies. If Sony does plan on picking up Paul Feig to produce the next Ghostbusters movie, audiences have a good chance at seeing their favorite female comedians grace the screen.
