“Unfair Pay” Almost Stopped American Hustle from Filming

Leaked Sony Pictures emails shows how the American Hustle movie almost didn’t happen.

Despite it being the film industry, women are still experiencing female inequality. According the AAUW (The American Association of University Women), women are paid 78% of what their male counterparts are paid and in recently leaked e-mails by Sony Execs, even A-List celebrities such as, Jennifer Lawrence and Amy Adams are fighting for equal compensation.

An email from Andrew Gumpert, president of business affairs and administration for Columbia Pictures, to Sony Pictures CEO Amy Pascal and Sony Pictures co-charirman Doug Belgrad, president of Sony Pictures Entertainment, revealed what each actor would get paid on American Hustle

In the leaked email, according to a report by The Daily BeastGumpert revealed that he received a call from Jennifer Lawrence’s attorneys, Steve Warren and Gretchen Rush, saying her compensation deal was “unfair”.

The movie’s director, David O. Russell, and the male actors each were expected to receive 9% of the total budget, while Jennifer Lawrence and Amy Adams were down to get only 7 percent (Lawrence’s original deal was 5 percent).

Gumpert later suggested Megan Ellison, the head of Annapurna Pictures, which co-financed American Hustle, increase Lawrence’s compensation. Which also would give Amy Adams a boost.American Hustle

 

American Hustle was a crime comedy-drama film directed David O. Russell, based on the FBI ABSCAM operation of the late 1970s and early 1980s. American Hustle features Christian Bale and Amy Adams as two con artists who are forced by an FBI agent (Bradley Cooper) o set up an elaborate sting operation to corrupt politicians, including the mayor of Camden, New Jersey (Jeremy Renner). Jennifer Lawrence plays the unpredictable wife of Christian Bale’s character.

Amy Adams

The film had its nationwide release in the United States on December 20, 2013, American Hustle was universally praised by critics, particularly for its cast. It received ten nominations at the 86th Academy Awards, including Best Picture,Best Director, and Best Original Screenplay, but did not win in any category.
