SRI LANKAN TAMIL FEMALE - who can believably play 14 - 17 years old
PRIYA is a smart, street-smart and sassy Sri Lankan Tamil teen, living in Western Sydney. She works hard at school but makes plenty of time for her friends and in particular for music. The contemporary poetry of rapping is her obsession. “Keep your head down and don’t make waves.” These are the words Priya has had drummed into her by her father, Sri, who lives in fear that one mistake could destroy their chances of gaining a temporary protection visa and see them sent back to Sri Lanka, the home they fled six years ago after the death of Priya’s mother. She tries to live by his guiding hand, but how can you express yourself rapping as a young Australian who cares passionately about her community - AND stay quiet? Then her dad goes missing. Priya has principles and it’s time she speaks up and stands by them. Weird as it sounds, speaking truth to power through social media and her talent for rapping, is how Priya is going to make her world a better place, find her dad and save her community.
