Job Description

The Entertainment Production group is responsible for producing live themed entertainment at Universal Studios Hollywood, including development of marquee events (Halloween Horror Nights, Holidays at Universal, etc), park entertainment of various scale (theatrical, street atmosphere, special events), placemaking efforts, and other notable special projects.

Working in a collaborative setting, the Production Designer is responsible for conceiving, defining, and developing the production design (‘environment’, scenic, set dressing, props, etc) within an assigned portfolio. This position reports to the Senior Manager, Production Design.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

Working with the Show Director and/or Creative Director, develops concepts via sketches, storyboards, and photo studies to communicate preliminary design ideas.
Creates comprehensive show set packages to relay design details to internal project teams for review/approval and to vendors for bidding and construction.
Works with IP holders as needed on proper usage of brand, adhering to all style guides and specific IP requests.
Presents designs to project team and Senior Management to communicate vision and implementation of elements.
Monitors construction progress, assisting in identifying and resolving any unexpected conditions and/or discrepancies between the construction, drawings, and design intent.
Continually performs quality checks for ongoing creative maintenance of elements.
Manages project team support staff, artists, and vendors in all phases of production.
This position is required to be performed full-time from an NBCUniversal-designated worksite.

Qualifications

 Minimum 5 years’ experience in theatrical and/or themed entertainment design and production.
 Solid hand and computer drawing/drafting skills in Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, SketchUp and AutoCAD.
 Must be willing to work weekends, holidays and nights as required.

Desired Characteristics

 Bachelor’s degree in scenic design or related themed entertainment field.
 Solid background in managing design of projects from concept to completion.
 Experience with in-field art direction, fabrication, and installations.
 Understanding of construction materials, paint call outs and finishing details
 Solid understanding of live entertainment production in a theme park environment.
 Demonstrated ability to work on multiple projects concurrently, with confidence to multi-task and delegate as required.
 Ability to drive results of teams through strong leadership and development skills.
 Ability to identify and communicate creative solutions to challenges, and to maintain a consistent focus on priorities with persistent follow-through.
 Confidence to communicate across all lines of business, with all levels of management.
 Ability to deal well with ambiguity and constant change, working in fast-paced environments with accelerated production schedules.
 A strong passion to drive high quality results, both end product as well as process.
