About Resident Evil:

The Resident Evil franchise has impacted popular culture since its initial release in 1996. The Resident Evil series, also known as Biohazard in Japan, has had numerous installments being released on platforms ranging from the original PlayStation all the way to modern consoles like Xbox One. All of these games have been met with both commercial and critical acclaim, with Resident Evil 2 perhaps being the most well-received of all time. Resident Evil 7: Biohazard is the latest addition to the Resident Evil franchise and has received over 80 Game of the Year Awards.

The Resident Evil series, originally released as Resident Evil (1996), was developed by Capcom and directed by Shinji Mikami for PlayStation consoles. There were originally six installments released in the Resident Evil series and it was not until Resident Evil 4 (2005) that the series became a mainstream success. Resident Evil 4 is known for its change in style from previous installments of Resident Evil, with Resident Evil 4 having more action-orientated gameplay and even featuring an over-the-shoulder camera perspective. Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, Resident Evil 4’s spiritual successor, is perhaps the most well-received Resident Evil game of all time.

Resident Evil 7 has been described as a “perfected blend of old and new Resident Evil” by GameSpot with many even calling for Resident Evil 7 to be remade in 3D like Resident Evil 2 (1998) was. Resident Evil 7 is the highest rated game of all time on OpenCritic with a critic score of 97% and an aggregated review score of 96%. Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil 4, Resident Evil 5 (2009), Resident Evil 6 (2012), and Resident Evil 7 are some of the best-selling games in the franchise. Resident Evil 4, Resident Evil 5, Resident Evil 6, and Resident Evil 7 have been released on multiple platforms. Resident Evil 5 for example had a Game of the Year Edition being released on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in 2009.

Resident Evil 8 is set to be released on January 24th 2019 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC under the working title Resident Evil 2. Resident Evil 8 is being developed by Capcom and will be published under their recently renamed brand, Capcom Game Studio. Resident Evil 8 will bring back the over-the-shoulder camera perspective as well as returning to survival horror as Resident Evil 7: Biohazard did. Resident Evil 8 will feature three main campaigns with four playable characters being released as post-launch DLC. Resident Evil 8 will have a ResidentEvil.com teaser site up soon before the game releases on January 24th 2019.

The Resident Evil series has impacted popular culture in a number of ways since its initial release back in 1996.

Resident Evil Movie Franchise

Resident Evil movie franchise is another story, Resident Evil (2002) was met with mediocre reviews and Resident Evil: Extinction (2007) and Resident Evil: Afterlife (2010) were commercial successes but did not receive much praise from critics. Resident Evil: The Final Chapter (2016) however received much praise and has become the highest-grossing film in the franchise. The Resident Evil movie franchise has not received much praise from critics, but all four films are some of the highest-grossing Resident Evil media ever created having made over $1 Billion worldwide.
