as an African-American I am tired of the wealthy entertainment side of our race always doing movies about "civil rights" and calling them "monumental" and "extraordinary" and "awards worthy". FIND OTHER STORIES TO TELL!! Oprah is so far from Selma and civil rights it's crazy. Was "civil rights" ever one or "Oprah's favorite things" on her show? With all that money and opportunity, she couldn't do a movie about life,love, success? A story about something other than this? I'm tired of being tired of these types of films by these people living in 30 million dollar homes, spending state budgets on security and shopping sprees to Europe. Be creative and knock off the slow witted mentality. Did Oprah March to Selma in the last 15 years before her movie about Selma was released, while her show was #1 in the ratings? sheesh. Who's gonna take you serious as a film producer when all your stories are already told ones?

Oprah Winfrey, the producer of Academy Award nominated best picture, Selma,&nbsp;is planning a march Sunday in Selma, Alabama. Oprah Winfrey will be walking alongside Ava DuVernay and leading actor David Oyelowo to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. birthday.

According to <a href="http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/oprah-winfrey-selma-team-march-764382" target="_blank">reports</a>, the event will pay tribute to Martin Luther King Jr.'s civil rights leadership and his involvement in in the voting rights protests of 1965, the focal point of the Oscar nominated movie,&nbsp;Selma.&nbsp;

Oprah, 'Selma' Cast and Crew to March in Alabama 

Hypocrites! Now films have to be historically accurate. For someone to have nigger as apart of his vocabulary, he was portrayed very well. I even clapped when he told Wallace off! Whites just trying to suppress the film, and succeeding, which is sad! Everyone Black, white, and every race in between should see this movie!

<h2>Was the 'Selma' movie snubbed in the 72nd Annual Golden Globes?</h2>
The filmmakers behind the MLK J.R biopic, did not have an amazing night last night.

The controversial drama entered Sunday's Golden Globes ceremony with four nominations but, only came home with one trophy for the best original song, "Glory" created by John Legend and Common.

The Oprah Winfrey production, described the events leading up to Martin Luther King Jr. march from Selma to Montgomery in 1965, didn't win a single award in any of the three major categories including best drama, which went to Boyhood.

David Oyelowo was nominated for best actor in a drama but lost to Eddie Redmayne for The Theory of Everything. Director Ava DuVernay was also nominated for best director, but lost to Boyhood director Richard Linklater.

Many argue that the reason why Selma lost was because people believe the movie was historically inaccurate. As we reported earlier this month, a History professor said <a href="https://www.projectcasting.com/blog/news/selma-faces-criticism-significant-errors/" target="_blank">the movie had "significant errors"</a> and a Lyndon B. Johnson scholar criticized the portrayal of the former president.

Was 'Selma' Snubbed at the 72nd Annual Golden Globes?

"Either way, the new Selma movie is facing more controversy than the historically inaccurate and now banned movie, Exodus: Gods and Kings."

Of course it is.  This is because America is a racist country and the movie "Selma" is a movie about an African-American who could not be whitewashed as could be done with the historical figures in "Exodus: Gods and Kings".

Also in the mix, Gary May is an older white male who was/is probably hated the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. 

This article is inaccurate and poorly written! Project casting please get it together.

I understand May's frustration (as I have read his article), but the film was lengthy as is. To cover all that actually happened would have been a 6 hour movie. I think one major goal here was to get a movie out there for the world to see about King and the movements he led and contributed too. Now that it's out there, I challenge viewers to WANT to learn more, EDUCATE themselves and do their RESEARCH. 

I thoroughly enjoyed the film!

<h2>A history professor is criticizing the&nbsp;Selma&nbsp;movie for being historically inaccurate.</h2>
According to Gary May, who published an essay on<a href="http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2015/01/02/dr-king-goes-to-hollywood-the-flawed-history-of-selma.html" target="_blank"> The Daily Beast</a>,&nbsp;the movie features numerous historical inaccuracies in the film.&nbsp;Selma&nbsp;centers around&nbsp;Martin Luther King's 1965 march from Salem to Montgomery, Alabama, has already been criticized by Lyndon B. Johnson about how the president is represented.

May writes in his essay that&nbsp;Ava DuVernay's "greatest failure" is "not fulfilling her stated purpose of highlighting Selma&#146;s civil rights movement. Except for a few scenes, we see little of the bravery Selma&#146;s citizens displayed."

Other "significant errors" May argues is that Bloody Sunday, in which state and local police attacked protestors, was not immediately shown on TV, as the movie illustrates.&nbsp;"Americans had to wait several hours until film of the event reached New York for it to be broadcast," he writes. May also argues that the movie downplayed the involvement of Selma's teachers in the protests.

Ultimately, all of the criticism May presents seem really superficial when you really examine the movie and it looks as a marketing stunt for the history professor to promote his 2013 book,&nbsp;Bending Toward Justice: The Voting Rights Act and the Transformation of American Democracy.

Oprah Winfrey recently argued that leaders need to step up following the Ferguson and Eric Garner unrest. From <a href="http://www.thewrap.com/oprah-winfrey-leaders-needed-following-ferguson-eric-garner-unrest/" target="_blank">TheWrap</a>:
<blockquote><a class="autotagged group-1" title="See all Oprah Winfrey" href="http://www.thewrap.com/tag/oprah_winfrey/">Oprah Winfrey</a> is ready for African-American leadership to step up to the plate in the wake of recent social unrest following the shooting death of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri, and the choking death of Eric Garner in New York. 'Selma' Faces Criticism for Being Having "Significant Errors"

<h2>OHSA is mandating all film and TV productions to report any work related accident to increase workplace safety.</h2>
Following the death of <a href="https://www.projectcasting.com/tag/sarah-jones/">camera assistant Sarah Jones</a>, the near death experiences of several crew members and extras on set of <a title="Crew Members and Extras Nearly Killed on Set of ‘Selma’" href="https://www.projectcasting.com/blog/news/selma-crew/">Selma, the government is starting to crackdown on "corner cutting" film</a> and TV producers.

Starting January 1st, the federal government will require more thorough reporting of injuries on film and TV productions. Up until now, only deaths or injuries to three or more workers in an eight-hour period that require hospitalization had to be reported. The new Occupational Safetey &amp; Health Administration requirements, however, mandate all accidents that result in trips to the hospital be reported to the agency.

From <a href="http://deadline.com/2015/01/osha-rules-changes-film-tv-sets-1201339203/">Deadline</a>:
<blockquote>Unless there’s a death, or unless it’s sexy, or unless there’s a lawsuit, most film and TV injuries go unreported in the media. Many more go unreported toOSHA. According to the agency’s database, fewer than a dozen stunt- or special effects-related injuries have been reported in the last 10 years, and only a handful of other injuries — including falls on set and a few accidents involving props — have been reported, including the train crash that killed camera assistant Sarah Jones on location in rural Georgia in February.

“Ultimately, (the new rules) will produce a safer workplace,” said Lindsay Williams, a spokesman for the U.S. Department of Labor, which oversees OSHA. He told Deadline the film and TV industry is well known for “a lot of corner cutting” when it comes to reporting accidents, and that injured workers are often told “not to mention it and keep it off the record. It’s terrible that that sort of mentality exists.”</blockquote>
The new laws will not impact California, but will affect major production hubs like Georgia, Louisiana, Texas and Florida, and other states whose workplace safety is covered at the federal level.

Government Cracking Down on Unsafe Film and TV Sets

<h2>Selma the most dangerous movie set in history? Crew member nearly killed after working on the Martin Luther King Jr. biopic.</h2>
The death of camera assistant, <a title="Sarah Jones" href="https://www.projectcasting.com/tag/sarah-jones/" target="_blank">Sarah Jones</a>, left a black mark on the face of the billion dollar film industry. Jones was killed while filming Midnight Rider in rural Georgia. Her death brought attention to the sometimes lack of safety and danger crew members, actors and extras put them selves in everyday to entertain millions of people.

Three months after Sarah Jones death, Ronnie Sands was nearly killed by a bolt of electricity on set of Selma in Atlanta, Georgia. A few weeks later, a set dresser fell through a roof while preparing the set in Montgomery, Alabama. In addition, several extras in the movie collapsed while shooting the final rally scene at the State Capitol.

From <a href="http://deadline.com/2014/12/selma-accident-crew-worker-electrocuted-1201338224/" target="_blank">Deadline</a>:
<blockquote>Sands recalled, “They were yelling at us on the walkie-talkie, ‘How long is it going to take to get that bulb in there?’” He said he then noticed another crew member plugging the ballast into the generator. “Don’t do that while I’m still putting in the bulb and my head and hand are still inside the fixture,” Sands yelled down at him. “The breaker is off the ballast,” the guy yelled back. “Don’t be a pussy.” Sands said he then yelled at a fellow electrician to unplug the light. But it was too late. That’s when an arc of electricity flashed from the fixture and struck him in the face as 18,000 watts jolted into his right hand; ran up his arm and into his heart, neck and head; and threw him backward to the ground below.

“I am very lucky to be alive,” Sands said.</blockquote>
Since the accident, Sands says he still suffers from aftereffects. His neurologist told reports that he has “difficulty with cognition, memory and thinking, over and beyond the electrical pain in right arm.”

Oprah Winfrey's 'Selma' movie has released their first trailer. David Oyelowo travels back to the 1960s and steps into the huge shoes of Martin Luther King Jr. in the first trailer for "Selma". "Selma" centers around the fight for equal voting rights that led to the march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama in 1965. "Selma" features Oprah Winfrey, who also produced the feature film, Tom Wilkinson as President Lyndon Johnson, who signed the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and Voting Rights Act of 1965. "Selma" also features Common, Wendell Pierce, Cuba Gooding Jr. and Tim Roth.

The upcoming feature film “Selma” centers on the three marches from Selma to Montgomery in 1965. The first which was known as “Bloody Sunday” because cops attacked marchers with clubs and gas. The protesters were seeking an equal voice in elections, which they later got with the passage of the Voting Rights Act later that year.

It was recently announced that Oprah Winfrey and Brad Pitt teamed up to produce the Martin Luther King Jr biopic.
According to <a href="http://www.al.com/entertainment/index.ssf/2014/06/selma_movie_to_host_casting_ca.html" target="_blank">AL.com</a>, <del>Paramount Pictures and Selma Productions Inc. will host an open casting call for extras in the upcoming filming of "Selma" from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. on June 10 at the John Abernathy Auditorium.</del>

Paramount Pictures and Selma Productions Inc. have rescheduled the open casting call for extras in the upcoming filming of "Selma" to June 9 at John Abernathy Auditorium.
The production company, which will film scenes in Selma on June 23 through June 26 as well as in Montgomery on June 27, is casting 500 extras for the movies. Candidates must: Be 17 to 70 years old, bring valid photo ID, a recent photo, able to work in the U.S., and attend a fitting in June.

NFL Films Casting Call for Lead Roles ($500/Day)

<h2>Quentin Tarantino's diss of Ava DuVernay's MLK biopic puts Tarantino in hot water.</h2>
Quentin <a href="http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/rambling-reporter/ava-duvernay-fires-back-at-842740">Tarantino</a> sparked controversy when the director dismissed Ava Duvernay's Selma by telling Bret Easton Ellis in T: The New York Times Style Magazine that the Oscar-nominated civil rights drama "deserved an Emmy." He would later clarify and say that he has never seen the movie.

Ava DuVernay is now responding to Tarantino's insult, calling out the director. "I was surprised by how surprised everyone was. When you look at his work and his persona, there's nothing surprising about what he said," she tells The Hollywood Reporter. "But it didn't bother me like so many assumed it would."

<a href="https://www.projectcasting.com/blog/news/quentin-tarantino-speaks-out-against-the-police-union-boycott-it-is-to-shut-my-mouth/">Tarantino</a> got in trouble several weeks ago after attending an anti-police brutality protest in New York City. His speech would later spark a nationwide boycott of his new movie The Hateful Eight. 

Selma had four Golden Globe Award nominations, including Best Motion Picture – Drama, Best Director, and Best Actor, and won for Best Original Song. It was also nominated for Best Picture and won Best Original Song at the 87th Academy Awards.

'Selma' Director Fires Back after Quentin Tarantino's Insult

If we're honest with ourselves, we'll accept that we haven't eradicated the racism of America's past. It's just been mostly transferred from an external hatred to an internal indifference, and neither is fair.

100% ridiculous! Not all actors who perform in movies will be nominated for any award let alone an Academy Award. Quite whining! I don't care what skin color you have, you want an award for a job you did? It's called a paycheck!

His attitude explains why he was willing to act in a movie that was substantially incorrect; MLK would not have recognized the events. There was some fine acting in that film; unfortunately, it was based on fiction. Black people need to be honest with themselves; from my personal experience, they are the ones that won't discuss race problems not Caucasians or other minorities. The instant it turns to a true and valid discussion, most become belligerent, hostile and begin shouting to get a point across. Equal ground, folks! Equal ground.

<h2>The actor, who was snubbed for playing Martin Luther King, Jr in Selma is pretty upset about not getting an Academy Award Nomination.</h2>
David Oyelowo accuses the Academy of favoring "subservient" black roles. Oyelowo said: "We, as black people, have been celebrated more for when we are subservient, when we are not being leaders or kings or being at the center of our own narrative".

Oyelowo said that the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and the entire film industry, don't enjoy making or celebrating movies about black protagonists unless the movies are told through the eyes of white people. Oyelowo says: "So you have a very nice white person who holds black people's hands through their own narrative."

David Oyelowo may have a point. The critical and commercial success of 2013 Oscar winning movie, 12 Years a Slave and The Butler, all demonstrate that movies about black people are only award winning when the lead actor is subservient. In addition,<a title="Academy Awards Racist? All Acting Nominees are White" href="https://www.projectcasting.com/blog/news/academy-awards-racist/" target="_blank"> for the first time in 20 years</a>, all of the acting nominees are white. This prompted the viral Twitter hashtag #OscarsSoWhite and an SNL sketch about how King himself would have been disappointed by the news. The response was so negative that the black president of the Academy, Cheryl Boone Isaacs was forced to respond to the criticism.

From <a href="http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/race/selma-star-david-oyelowo-accuses-769032" target="_blank">the Hollywood Reporter</a>:
<blockquote>As evidence, Oyelowo argued that "Denzel Washington should have won for playing Malcolm X" and that Sidney Poitier should have won his Oscar for In the Heat of the Night rather than Lilies of the Field.  "So this bears out what I'm saying," the actor continued, "which is we've just got to come to the point whereby there isn't a self-fulfilling prophecy — a notion of who black people are — that feeds into what we are celebrated as, not just in the Academy, but in life generally. We have been slaves, we have been domestic servants, we have been criminals, we have been all of those things. But we have been leaders, we have been kings, we have been those who changed the world." The audience responded with applause.

Oyelowo continued, "Those films are so hard to get made. People have often said to me, 'Why has it taken so long?' I mean, he [King] was assassinated almost 50 years ago. There has been no film where Dr. King has been the center of his own narrative up until now. That's because up until 12 Years a Slave and The Butler did so well, both critically and at the box-office, films like this were told through the eyes of white protagonists because there is a fear of white guilt."</blockquote>

David Oyelowo Says Oscars Favor "Subservient" Black Roles

When do auditions start? And if their auditioning are they coming to Atlanta? 

Sounds like a disaster to me...just like the actual event.  But maybe she will get it right this time. 

Also, look out for on-set injuries. Ava has a history of covering up on-set injuries just like she did on Selma. And can she work on something in the present time? What is it with her re-creating dramatic and traumatic events in US history? She should go back to being a publicist.

<h2>'Selma' Director Ava Duvernay, is getting started on her next feature film and turning her attention to Hurricane Katrina.</h2>
The <a href="https://www.projectcasting.com/tag/selma/">Selma</a> director is developing a feature film centering around a complex murder mystery and love story set against the backdrop of the hurricane of 2005.

<a href="https://www.projectcasting.com/tag/David-Oyelowo">David Oyelowo</a>, is currently in negotiations to produce and star in the upcoming feature film and will mark the third collaboration for DuVernay and Oyelowo.

<a href="https://www.projectcasting.com/blog/tag/ava-duvernay/">Ava DuVernay</a> will write, produce and direct the Hurricane Katrina movie. Since working on the Academy Award nominated movie, Selma, has launched her career. Selma, which cost only $20 million to make has earned $40 million at the box office to date.

No details surrounding the movie's filming location have been released. But, with <a href="https://www.projectcasting.com/blog/tag/louisiana/">Louisiana</a> film credit expect production to start in the next few months in the French Quarter.

'Selma' Director to Direct New Hurricane Katrina Drama

<h2>Watch David Oyelowo describe the acting challenges he faced while working on 'Selma'.</h2>
In Selma, David Oyelowo plays Martin Luther King, Jr. during the events surrounding the 1965 Selma voting rights marches. While David Oyelowo was snubbed during this year's Academy Awards, he received widespread acclaim by critics during the weeks leading up to its limited release on Christmas Eve.

In a conversation with the Screen Actors Guild Foundation, Pete Hammond of Deadline interviewed David Oyelowo about the movie role and what it was like playing the legendary character. During the course of the interview you hear David Oyelowo describe what it was like working on the movie. Oyelowo even explains that throughout the movie he never broke character.
