Jake Gyllenhaal recently visited <a href="http://www.npr.org/2015/07/22/425245982/jake-gyllenhaal-on-throwing-and-taking-punches-its-very-primal">NPR's "Fresh Air"</a> to discuss his new movie, 'Southpaw,' but the conversation quickly turned to the death of his "Brokeback Mountain" co-star Heath Ledger, prompting the actor to reveal how that loss has changed his perspective on Hollywood.

“It brings me back to thinking about doing that scene with Heath, and the honor it was to work with him, and the beauty of his work. And I miss him as a human being, and I miss working with him. And what an unfortunate thing it is that we won’t be able to see the beauty of his expression,” Gyllenhaal said.

“He was incredibly special, and that doesn’t even come close to encapsulating who he is — who he was,” Gyllenhaal added, revealing that losing such a close friend of a similar age helped shift his priorities.

“I think that’s why I like to go off and I like to try and get into worlds that will wake me up… I’m trying to be present where I am. And I know that not only can this career end in a very short period of time and this or that can happen, but also that life is precious,” he noted. “And I think losing Heath — and being a part of a family that was something like that movie we all made together — makes you see that, makes you appreciate that and hopefully moves you away from the things that really don’t matter to the things that do.”

Gyllenhaal also remembered the reactions he and Ledger received for being straight actors playing gay roles after they were cast: “It was fascinating, particularly because I don’t think we knew what a success the movie would be, what it would become. It was an intimate and really scary thing for me and Heath, in particular, to dive into. It was uncomfortable for both of us in some of the scenes, and yet we both deeply believed in what the movie was saying.”

Gyllenhaal and Ledger starred as repressed and separated lovers in the 2005 romantic drama. Ledger would die 3 years later.

<p class="p2">You&#146;ve undoubtedly seen The Dark Knight more than once, either because you&#146;re a part of the superhero films fever or because of Heath Ledger&#146;s fantastic acting skills. You cannot deny that this man made one of the best performances of The Joker. Are you wondering how did get it? It was all thanks to the Method.</p>
<p class="p2">This man devoted himself entirely to prepare this character. In an interview, the actor confessed he locked himself several nights in a hotel practicing the character&#146;s iconic voice and laugh. He was living in the mental world of a psychopath with a little conscious of his actions.</p>
<p class="p2">Moreover, in the famous scene in which Batman interrogates the Joker, Ledger asked Bale to punch him as strong as the superhero would beat the villain. The final result entirely worth it because he won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor and many other awards.</p>

However, it was his performance as Hugh Glass in The Revenant the one that made him win an academy award. You&#146;ll be shocked to know the level of intensity this role demanded of Leo.</p>
<p class="p2">Considering the low temperatures that Leo had to feel during the filmmaking process in the Arctic, Canada, and Argentina, the team was also under tremendous pressure because they only had a couple of hours to shoot all the scenes. He mentioned that the recordings used to be a survival adventure.</p>
<p class="p2">However, the toughest moment he lived was the scene in which he had to eat a bison liver. The actor stepped his vegan and ecologist philosophy aside to make the scene look natural. The euphoria, animal instinct and waves of nausea this character showed were the same things DiCaprio felt at the moment.</p>

<p class="p2">To get ready for this role, the actress spent a long season living and acting as if she were a boy. Her attitude was so real that her neighbors even believed the actress had a younger brother that used to visit her every day.</p>
<p class="p2">This film had several nominations to the most important award ceremonies in the world. In some of them, the film won thanks to Hilary Swank because she got the award as Best Actress. There&#146;s also no doubt this was a box office success despite its low budget. Amazing, isn&#146;t it?</p>

<p class="p1"><span class="s1">Heath Ledger passed away six months before the release of <i>The Dark Knight, </i>the movie that won him an Oscar for his performance as the Joker. There have been rumors that Ledger would have returned for <i>The Dark Knight Rises, </i>but director Christopher Nolan never confirmed the reports. Instead, we have to take the word from Heath’s sister, Kate, who in an interview published last year, but only recently went viral, revealed her brother was ready to play the Joker again.</span></p>
<p class="p3"><span class="s1">“He was so proud of what he had done in [<i>The Dark Knight]</i>,” she said. “And I know he had plans for another <i>Batman</i>. He loved working with Chris Nolan and Christian Bale… He just had the best time ever doing that film. When he came home at Christmas, he couldn’t wait to tell us all about it and he was doing the voice and laughing, showing me all the rushes. We had a great time.”</span></p>
<p class="p3"><span class="s1">Instead of the return of the Joker, the main villain in <i>The Dark Knight Rises </i>was Bane. But even Tom Hardy (and especially Jared Leto) couldn’t match Ledger’s acting performance.</span></p>

Heath Ledger Was Going To Play The Joker In Another ‘Batman’ Movie

<h2>Heath Ledger's father reveals his son's final words before he died.</h2>
In 2008, the tragic passing of Heath Ledger shocked the world. At 28 years old, not only was his death totally unexpected but it was made all the more shocking by two factors. He was at the peak of his career, and he was a recent father to a 2-year-old daughter who would grow up never knowing her father.

And, while much of the blame was placed upon the actor's deep involvement in his role as the Joker in <i>The Dark Knight, </i>ultimately it was a lethal concoction of prescription painkillers that killed him.
<h2>Heath Ledger overdose</h2>
Eight years following his death, it still highlights the fact that celebrities tend to turn to prescription painkillers to cope with the pressures of Hollywood. And while the issue is not new, it remains undiscussed, which is something Ledger's dad is now working on addressing.&nbsp;In an interview with Daily Mail Australia earlier this week, the 66-year-old recounted a devastating conversation his daughter, Katie, had with Heath the night before he was found, face-down in his NYC apartment, with a cocktail of oxycodone, diazepam, hydrocodone and doxylamine in his system:

"It was totally his fault. It was no one else's - he reached for them. He put them in his system. You can't blame anyone else in that situation.&nbsp;That's hard to accept because I loved him so much and was so proud of him.&nbsp;His sister was on the phone to him the night before telling him not to take the prescription medications with the sleeping tablets. He said: 'Katie, Katie, I'm fine. I know what I'm doing.' He would have had no idea."

One would think that the weight of the conversation is still shocking, but when dealing with something as addictive as painkillers, it can be almost impossible to rewire a person's mind. After all, in the year before Heath's death, for example, the prescription painkiller Fetanyl killed over 1,000 people and was found to be 30&#150;50 times stronger than heroin.
<h3>Is it the film industry's fault?</h3>
Heath Ledger's father continues on by saying the pressure of the film industry on actors leads actors to start taking prescription pills just to do their jobs.&nbsp;"There's so much pressure on them to perform so even though your body is telling you that it's not good and needs time, it's like "just take these painkillers and keep going". That was the case with Heath. He had to be back on set to finish (the next day). They were doing night shoots in the freezing cold and he had a weak chest anyway. He'd caught this (cough) and just couldn't shake it but he thought he had to because he wanted to get the movie done."
<h3>Celebrity Drug Addictions</h3>
Heath Ledger is not alone. In 2001,&nbsp;<em>Stranger Things'&nbsp;</em>star Winona Ryder was arrested for shoplifting. And while everyone was talking about the fact she stole clothes, many people didn't know she also had eight variations of painkillers in her purse.
<p class="content article-block article-block--paragraph" data-reactid="219">Ryder recalled the moment in a 2007 interview with Vogue:&nbsp;"Two months prior to that, I broke my arm in two places, and the doctor &#133; was giving me a lot of stuff and I was taking it at first to get through the pain. And then there was this weird point when you don't know if you are in pain but you're taking it. Have you ever taken painkillers? It isn't a reckless [state], like you're out of your head. It's just confusion."</p>
<p class="content article-block article-block--paragraph" data-reactid="219">Even Matthew Perry, the&nbsp;<em>Friends'&nbsp;</em>star became addicted to prescription pills.&nbsp;He told Larry King in August 2002:&nbsp;"I got into a serious problem with painkillers, a painkiller called Vicodin. And that was mostly just to not drink as much as I was. I was getting too hung over, so I tried other things that would try to balance me out."</p>

Heath Ledger's Father Reveals His Son's Last Words

<h2><a href="https://www.projectcasting.com/tag/heath-ledger/">Heath Ledger</a>'s family hints a possible biopic movie is coming soon.</h2>
Heath Ledger's father Kim has spoken out about the heartbreak he and his family continue to feel about the sudden and tragic death of his son. But, the father also hinted at the possibility of turning the late actor's life into a biopic.

The 66-year-old told The Daily Telegraph that he was still "pretty sensitive" about any topic surrounding Heath's sudden death and that, the media's interest in Ledger's life was "a little difficult" for him and his relatives.

Kim went on to point out that the biopic of Heath Ledger's life "could happen," although he doesn't think right now isn't the perfect time yet. He pointed out that:
<blockquote>"Heath was a pretty quiet individual so [a biopic] is not something we'd really be interested in participating in. I have no doubt somebody will do something one day but when the timing for that is right, I don't know when that will be."</blockquote>
Heath Ledger's father has been dedicated to respectfully preserving his son's memory, so it's quite understandable that he wants to be a considerable distance between Heath's death and the circus surrounding the events that led to it. Of course, with an actor Heath Ledger's fan base and acting abilities, it would be extremely difficult to cast someone that people both love and can do him justice.

Many people believe that Heath Ledger's dedication to immersing himself into the role of the Joker led him to his tragic death, and a look inside the actor's "Joker Diary" is a clear reminder of how committed Ledger was to the role and acting.

In a German documentary titled 'Too Young to Die,' Heath Ledger's father, Kim Ledger, shared details about Heath Ledger's dedication to playing the role of Joker.

The Joker Diary features a ton of twisted characters such as hyenas from Lion King and the character "Alex" from Stanley Kubrick's 'A Clockwork Orange'.
<h3>How Heath Ledger created "The Joker Diary"</h3>

While going through the diary, Heath Ledger's father confirms that his son cut himself off from society in order to dig into the Joker's twisted mentality and character.
<blockquote>"He galvanized the upcoming character. That was typical of Heath. He would do that. He liked to dive into his characters, but this time he really took it up a notch."</blockquote>
Before his death, Heath Ledger discussed how he created the director, and in turn learned how to speak like a sociopathic killer like The Joker, he explained to Empire that:
<blockquote>"I sat around in a hotel room in London for about a month, locked myself away, formed a little diary and experimented with voices - it was important to try to find a somewhat iconic voice and laugh.

I ended up landing more in the realm of a psychopath - someone with very little to no conscience towards his acts.

He’s just an absolute sociopath, a cold-blooded, mass-murdering clown, and Chris has given me free rein. Which is fun, because there are no real boundaries to what The Joker would say or do. Nothing intimidates him, and everything is a big joke."</blockquote>

<h3>Heath Ledger studied the history of The Joker</h3>

Alongside drawings and inspiration for sick and twisted characters, Ledger also studied all of the Joker's past evil deads in the DC Comic universe.

The diary also contained a shot of the original makeup test for the Joker with an erratically scrawled note that Ledger had added later that reads:

The diary's final pages features the words "BYE BYE" written over a page, and although Ledger was probably saying goodbye to the character, Ledger would eventually pass away.
