So, we're building out the world, and when that fifth movie comes, it will be organically grown out of how we're starting to tell those stories. But you can rely on a regular cadence of John Wick."

<h2>Ghost in the Shell&nbsp;starring Scarlett Johansson is now holding an open casting call in Wellington, New Zealand.</h2>
Rachel Bullock Casting posted a casting call for extras to appear in the Dreamworks and Paramount Pictures' upcoming live-action thriller,&nbsp;Ghost in the Shell.&nbsp;The casting call is for people of all ethnicities, age 18 and over, and able to work.

Filming is started to begin from Wellington's Stone Street Studios in January 2016.

Dreamworks and Paramount are con-financing and co-producing the film. Paramount will handle the international release of the upcomign feature film and Dreamworks will handle the release according to their original deal with Disney. The movie is set to open on March 31, 2017.

Disney initially scheduled the release of the live-action film for April 14, 2017, but announced its plans to push forward the release of the movie into April.

Scarlett Johansson, the actress most known for&nbsp;Lucy, Lost in Translation,&nbsp;and&nbsp;The Avengers&nbsp;signed on to star in this adaptation of&nbsp;<cite class="e person">Masamune Shirow</cite>'s manga, and <cite class="e person">Rupert Sanders</cite> (<cite>Snow White and the Huntsman</cite>) will direct off a script by <cite class="e person">William Wheeler</cite> (<cite>Hoax, The Reluctant Fundamentalist</cite>).

Johannson revealed earlier in April that the film "will be shooting the beginning of next year, so I think we start production January or February." Deadline reported earlier this year that she was offered $10 million for the role.

'Ghost in the Shell' Starring Scarlett Johansson Open Casting Call

<h2>Scarlett Johansson to star in the upcoming DreamWorks' new movie 'Ghost in the Shell'</h2>
The star of the sci-fi thriller 'Lucy' has signed on to star in the Japanese anime-based thriller. Rupert Sanders will direct a script written by Bill Wheeler.

Based on the Japanese comic books of the same name, the story follows the exploits of a member of a covert ops unit of the Japanese National Public Safety Commission that specializes in fighting technology-related crime. Back in the fall, THR reported that Johansson had received a $10 million offer to star in the film.

Scarlett Johansson to Star in the Upcoming 'Ghost in the Shell' Movie

<h2><a href="https://www.projectcasting.com/tag/ghost-in-the-shell/">Ghost in the Shell</a> producer, Steven Paul, defends casting Scarlett Johansson following "whitewash" casting backlash.</h2>
Steven Paul, a producer for the upcoming cinematic adaptation of the Japanese manga series Ghost in the Shell, recently spoke with Buzzfeed in defense of the movie's decision to cast Scarlett Johansson, a white actress, in the lead role of the movie. Many fans considered the casting of Johansson another example of whitewashing in Hollywood, an ongoing issue many <a href="https://www.projectcasting.com/blog/news/asian-americans-bash-hollywoods-casting-process">Asian American actors are fed up</a> with.

Paul's argument seems to be that everyone is worried that casting Johansson will lead to disappointment. But, he wants you to to not worry because you are "going to be very, very, happy with it." Paul continued by saying, “There [are] all sorts of people and nationalities in the world in Ghost in the Shell,” he insists, “We’re utilizing people from all over the world…There’s Japanese in it. There’s Chinese in it. There’s English in it. There’s Americans in it.”

Paul doesn't clearly explain why a Japanese actress could not play the leading role in the movie. “I don’t think it was just a Japanese story. [It] was a very international story…it was supposed to be an entire world,” he said. “That’s why I say the international approach is, I think, the right approach to it.”

At the end of the day, it's all about money. And Paul is simply trying to protect his investment with this fluff interview with Buzzfeed. However, as whitewashing criticism continues to spread across the film industry and into our social media feeds, Paul may regret his casting decision. In fact, box office studies show that movies with a diverse cast actually do better than un-diverse movie. For example, just look at <a href="https://www.projectcasting.com/blog/news/alohas-director-apologizes-for-white-washing-the-cast">Aloha</a>! and <a href="https://www.projectcasting.com/blog/news/gods-of-egypt-box-office-flop">Gods of Egypt</a>, two movies that were criticized for a whitewashed cast and they both flopped in the box office.

'Ghost in the Shell' Producer Defends Casting Scarlett Johansson

<h2>Hollywood's biggest Asian American actresses call out the upcoming Ghost in the Shell movie.</h2>
Asian-American actresses call Scarlett Johansson's Ghost in the Shell role a form of modern day "blackface". Recently several Asian-American actresses have spoken out calling Ghost in the Shell Hollywood whitewashing.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, on Saturday, Agents of SHIELD's Ming-Na Wen andFresh Off the Boat's Constance Wu commented on the first image of Scarlett Johansson as Ghost in the Shell leading lady, Major Motoko Kusanagi.
<blockquote>"It was particularly heinous because they ran CGI tests to make her look more Asian," said Wu.

"Some people call it 'yellowface,' but I say 'the practice of blackface employed on Asians' because that's more evocative."

Wu explained that the problem with the reported tests is that "it reduces our race and ethnicity to mere physical appearance, when our race and culture are so much deeper than how we look."</blockquote>
This news comes as reports surfaced that producers experimented with changing Scarlet Johansson's ethnicity using CGI. And the recent Oscars joke which poked fun at Asian American children calling them 'Minions'. Wen then called out Hollywood's history of degrading Asian actors. "We're easy targets," Wen asserted. "It's not in our nature to speak up and voice our concerns. That needs to change. We need to emulate the African-American community, whether through fear, being loud, or humor."

However, one panelist gave one of the biggest pieces of advice to other aspiring Asian-American actors. Joan Chen, the screen legend behind Netflix's Marco Polo and several other Hollywood feature films said "The best way to repudiate their one-dimensional story is by telling 1,001 of our own. It's easier to protest than to create a show."

<h2>Fans are bashing the upcoming&nbsp;<a href="https://www.projectcasting.com/tag/ghost-in-the-shell/">Ghost in the Shell</a>&nbsp;and a new petition is going viral.</h2>
The backlash against&nbsp;Ghost in the Shell&nbsp;is reaching an all-time high. Following reports that producers tested digital visual effects to make actors look more Asian, fans of the popular manga series have started a petition calling Dreamworks to "Stop Whitewashing Asian Characters".

In a petition created by Julie Rodriguez, which has reached 93,309 supporters in less than 24 hours, fans are calling for Dreamworks to recast the upcoming Ghost in the Shell&nbsp;movie.

As the petition reaches it's goal of 95,000 signatures,&nbsp;Japanese fans took to Twitter to support the casting decision, according to a new report by&nbsp;The Hollywood Reporter.&nbsp;
<blockquote>"It's a Hollywood movie, it can't be helped that there's going to be a white lead actress. Well, best to think of it as an artificial body situation," tweeted @Imperia_r.

"There's been a lot of criticism from foreign fans about the casting of Scarlett Johansson as Motoko Kusanagi in the movie adaptation of Ghost in the Shell," wrote @janyojanyo. "It's about artificial bodies, so you may as well think of it as her using a white cyborg. The manga and anime have differences anyway. It's still better than them casting Rinko Kikuchi just because she can speak English."</blockquote>
Ghost in the Shell&nbsp;centers around a cyborg policewoman attempts to bring down a nefarious computer hacker. 'Ghost in the Shell' Boycott Petition Goes Viral

<h2>A new report suggests <a href="https://www.projectcasting.com/tag/ghost-in-the-shell/">Ghost in the Shell</a> producers used special effects to make <a href="https://www.projectcasting.com/tag/scarlett-johansson/">Scarlett Johansson</a> look more asian.</h2>
Critics have already started bashing The Ghost in the Shell movie for filming in New Zealand and featuring Scarlett Johansson as the leading actress. But to make matter worse, reports claim that producers at one point considered testing special effects to make Scarlett Johansson Asian features and make her look more Asian instead of just casting an Asian actress.

Yesterday, the first image of Johansson's character as Major Motoko Kusangi- a Japanese cyborg - featuring Johansson with short and dark hair. The movie just started filming in New Zealand this week and hits theaters on March 31st next year.

However a Screen Crush reports suggest producers wanted to hire Lola VFX, the company that digitally recreated Brad Pitt for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button to test effects that would have changed Johansson's physical attributes and make her look less white:
<blockquote>After the backlash surrounding Johansson’s role in the film, producers reportedly attempted to quell the controversy with an old standby Hollywood uses to fix a lot of problems: CGI.

According to multiple independent sources close to the project, Paramount and DreamWorks commissioned visual effects tests that would’ve altered Scarlett Johansson in post-production to “shift her ethnicity” and make the Caucasian actress appear more Asian in the film.</blockquote>
According to reports Johansson didn't know about the testing, and:
<blockquote>Though the tests were requested by the production team, once they were developed and reviewed, the idea was rejected “immediately,” says an insider.</blockquote>
Paramount Pictures has denied these claims, telling Screen Crush: “A test was done related to a specific scene for a background actor which was ultimately discarded. Absolutely no visual effects tests were conducted on Scarlett’s character and we have no future plans to do so.”

Apparently, Hollywood has not gotten the message from the dozen movies that have whitewashed the movie's cast. For example, Aloha featured Emma Stone as an Asian-American instead of casting an actual Asian American actress. Or, Gods of Egypt featured Caucasian actors playing Gods of AFRICA. It's important to point out that both of these movies have flopped in the box office. This is not the first time Hollywood whitewashed anime movies. The live-action version of Dragon Ball Z also featured an all white cast. And just like Gods of Egypt and Aloha that movie also flopped in the box office.

In fact, Scarlett Johansson's recent movie Lucy was bashed by many people for whitewashing, the movie's plot and depiction of Asian people in Hollywood. <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/olivia-cole/lucy-why-im-tired-of-seei_b_5627318.html">From</a> The Huffington Post:
<blockquote>How is it that in a film whose premise rests on the idea of reimagining the past, present and future, we still end up with a blonde white woman with flashing blue eyes as the stand-in for what personifies evolution and supremely fulfilled human potential?</blockquote>
Hopefully, Ghost in the Shell doesn't get boycotted. But, many people on Twitter are already threatening to boycott the movie. A user with the user @XavierDLeau offered, “If there’s any Japanese protestors out there protesting against Ghost in the Shell, know I stand with you.” And a person named @SamuraiErika tweeted, “I like ScarJo. I’m still disappointed to see Ghost in the Shell whitewashed. More casting like this is coming, and now’s the time to object.”

“I REALLY like Scarlett Johansson… But it bothers me Hollywood STILL overlooks a lot of Asian actors,” a person named @Meghan_IGN tweeted upon seeing the still from the film. A user with the handle ‏@NeilaK20 plans to boycott the movie, expressing, “I’m prob not gonna see the Ghost in the Shell movie even tho I like ScarJo. I’m tired of Hollywood casting white people for Asian characters.”

I guess if you can't find diversity, then you can always add diversity in post-production.

'Ghost in the Shell' Producers Used CGI To Make Scarlett Johansson Asian?

<h2>Hundreds audition for an extra role on Scarlett Johansson's 'Ghost in the Shell'.</h2>
A small casting call for actors wanting to be extras in the new movie Ghost in the Shell turned into a major event. Over 1,000 New Zealand actors went to the open casting call, held over the past month, to work alongside Scarlett Johansson.

Shooting for the anime adaptation Ghost in the Shell is set to start filming out of Wellington's Stone Street Studios in January next year.

The DreamWorks Studio film is based on the critically acclaimed Japanese manga and anime series of the same name about a cyborg police officer attempting to bring down a computer hacker played by Scarlett Johannson.

Johansson, who is a BAFTA and Esquires magazine's Sexiest Woman Alive in 2013, is reportedly getting ready to work on the new Ghost in the Shell Movie.

According to reports, extras waited over an hour to be seen by casting directors.
<blockquote>Chris McMorran, 29, went to an audition last Wednesday, where he was number 960 in the line after one just an hour of the casting call opening.

Inside, he had four photos taken, and was asked to pose like a bouncer. Slim females were asked if they had dancing experience, he said.

ScarJo was not in attendance, although there was plenty of buzz around the actress coming to Wellington.

"I wouldn't say it was like, 'Oh my God we're going to work with ScarJo', it was more like, 'Oooh we might see her at the fish and chip shop'," McMorran said. All actors interested in working in the movie are expected to be available in Wellington between March and May 2016. Ghost in the Shell casting director, Liz Mullane, who also worked on Lord of the Rings, The Lovely Bones and The Hobbit, said her team had seen "hundreds and hundreds" of hopefuls over the past month.

Casting directors are casting a ton of roles in the upcoming feature film. Basically, anyone 18 years or older can apply.

"We got people from all sorts of walks of life, every imaginable cross-section of people, really," Mullane said.

She did not yet know how many people they would end up needing. "It's very early in the process, so it's just a matter of collecting great faces.

"The next stage in the process is presenting the people we've seen to the director and making decisions and going from there."

Those who were successful would probably hear back within the next two months, she said.
