‘Watchmen’ TV Series in Development with HBO

Date:

A brand new Watchmen TV series is in development with HBO and Zack Snyder

In 2009, during the early waves of superhero movies, Zack Snyder brought Alan Moore’s acclaimed comic book limited series Watchmen to Warner Bros. While the movie did fairly well with critics, it wasn’t a runaway hit at the box office, either. However, HBO is looking into picking up the failed movie and plans on turning it into a TV series.

The original Watchmen movie stars  Malin Åkerman, Billy Crudup, Matthew Goode, Jackie Earle Haley, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Carla Gugino, and Patrick Wilson. The film is set in an alternate history in the year 1985 at the height of the Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union, as a group of mostly retired American superheroes investigates an apparent conspiracy against them and uncovers something even more grandiose and sinister.

Producer Lawrence Gordon began developing the project at 20th Century Fox and Warner Bros. (parent company of Watchmen publisher DC Comics) with producer Joel Silver and directorTerry Gilliam, the latter eventually deeming the complex comic “un-filmable.”

According to Collider, Snyder has been meeting with HBO to talk about a Watchmen series.

Our sources tell us that the meetings about adapting the DC Comics property have taken place, but unfortunately we don’t have any details as to whether this would be a prequel series, a re-imagining of the events of the Watchmen story itself, or a sequel series.

But, before you get your 6 year old Watchmen memorabilia out of the closet, remember HBO has a history of picking up and dropping TV series. For example, HBO couldn’t reach a deal with David Fincher and his Utopia series and studio executives shut down the production of Fincher’s half-hour comedy series. Therefore, popularity does not always breed success with HBO.
