After announcing that the Tupac biopic, All Eyez on Me, would film in Atlanta, Georgia, news surfaced that there was trouble behind the scenes.

Morgan Creek’s Tupac Shakur movie, the company has just hired a music video and commercial director, Benny Boom, to create the Tupac biopic.

Morgan Creek has been working for years to bring the late rapper’s story to the movies, is operating with “a sense of urgency” because the music rights will revert back to Shakur’s mother, Afeni Shakur, at the end of the year if the movie is not in production by then.

Carl Franklin was supposed to direct the movie, after John Singleton quit production in April. “The people involved aren’t really respectful of the legacy of Tupac,” Singleton wrote on Instagram, promising to make his own rival project.

But the movie continued in production until Franklin quietly quit the movie last month. In late October, producers Emmett/Furla filed a $10 million lawsuit against Morgan Creek, saying the company breached co-production agreement by selecting a lead actor and budget without their approval.

Given the success of the previous rap biopic, Universal’s Straight Outta Compton, a Tupac biopic movie seemed like a smart decision.

Tupac’s life surrounds his rise in hip-hop acting and later controversial death that has inspired and sparked the hip hop industry.

Benny Boom’s previously works include the 2009 action comedy Next Day Air and the made for DVD movie S.W.A.T.: Firefight. Outside of making low budget movies, Benny Boom won the video director of the year at the BET Awards for his work with artists such as Nicki Minaj, Lil Wayne and Meek Mill.
