Over the Labor Day weekend, Top Gun: Maverick–whose leading actor is Tom Cruise-reclaimed its place at the top of the box office. According to Variety, it earned an extra $7.9 million from Friday to Monday, thus raising total ticket sales to $701 million. In other words, after 15 weeks and with domestic box office earnings of $700.4 million, it has surpassed Marvel’s Black Panther.

Maverick has outperformed Black Panther significantly internationally and globally — the Joseph Kosinski-directed pic has grossed $740 million overseas and $1.44 billion worldwide. The Chadwick Boseman-starring superhero film peaked at only $674 million overseas and $1.347 billion globally.

Top Gun: Maverick is the only film to ever reach No. 1 at the domestic box office during both Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends, according to Box Office Mojo.

“It’s without a doubt that ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ is a true cultural touchstone embodying the power of the cinematic experience,” said Brian Robbins, president, and CEO of Paramount Pictures, in a statement. “As we celebrate this enormous achievement and the film’s massive impact, we want to extend our gratitude to Tom Cruise, our filmmakers and cast, Paramount’s marketing and distribution teams, and the legions of both new and longtime ‘Top Gun’ fans who keep turning out to enjoy this remarkable movie.”

Among the top five grossing films domestically, Top Gun: Maverick ranks at number four, behind Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($936 million), Avengers: Endgame ($858 million), and Spider-Man:: No Way Home ($811 million). While it may be lower ranked than some other movies, it still did well in box office sales comparable to James Cameron’s film Avatar, which grossed $760 million.
