The project is still in its very beginning stages, but the young star took to Instagram recently to confirm the news. Sweeney posted an image of the original artwork from the 1968 space opera along with captioning it “time to save the universe.” Jane Fonda played Barbarella in the film’s original release. The film was based on French writer and illustrator Jean-Claud Forest’s comic series about a space-traveling heroine. At the time, it wasn’t very successful commercially, but it has developed a cult following over the years.

Sweeney and Sony Pictures have collaborated before for Madame Web. The actress not only starred alongside Dakota Johnson but is also preparing for her next role in The Registration, an adaptation of Madison Lawson’s thriller novel with the same title.

No news has been announced about the production timeline of Barbarella as of now.
