When asked point-blank if Will is gay, Benioff and Weiss responded that “there were conversations about it” but declined to give a definitive answer. They did clarify, however, that the characters are written with “clear intention and strategy and really thought,” according to Entertainment Weekly. “Without getting into where we go later in Season 4 [Volume 2], I guess I’ll just say that there aren’t many accidents on Stranger Things,” the producer said. “There is clear intention and strategy and real thought given to each and every character. So, if you came away from Volume 1 feeling those bread crumbs of plot and character, it’s probably no accident.”

Some have interpreted a moment in episode five, when Will and Mike, played by Finn Wolfhard, are discussing the program’s synopsis, as Will trying to disclose his sexuality to him.,” Sometimes I think it’s just scary to open up like that, to say how you really feel, especially to people you care about the most because what if they don’t like the truth?”

There are also references to Will’s sexuality throughout the season, such as his essay on World War II codebreaker Alan Turing, who was imprisoned in 1952 for homosexual conduct.

This isn’t the first time a character’s sexuality has been an issue in Stranger Things; in season three, Maya Hawke’s Robin came out to Joe Keery’s Steve in a touching moment.
