‘Shazam! Fury of the Gods’ Abysmal Opening Has Director Saying He Is “Done With Superheroes for Now”

‘Shazam! Fury of the Gods’ Opening Weekend Box Office Numbers Leave Director Vowing To Step Away from Superhero Films for Now

After the disappointing box-office results of his film Shazam! Fury of the Gods director David F. Sandberg has decided to take a break from making superhero films.

After the immense success of Marvel’s Shazam! in 2019, it was time for an encore – enter Shazam! Fury of the Gods a highly anticipated sequel. Sandberg’s directorial debut was met with rave reviews, earning a 90% rating from Rotten Tomatoes and over 420 votes of approval. On March 20th, Sandberg tweeted that his latest sequel had achieved the discrepancy of receiving his “lowest critic score” and highest audience rating among his films. Sandberg admitted being taken aback by his movie’s reception, despite not anticipating matching its predecessor’s critical acclaim. He commented that he was surprised because he believed it to be a great film. Seizing the moment, the director declared that this was a prime time to revisit classic horror and focus on its genre. “Oh well. As I’ve been saying for a while now, I’m very eager to go back to horror (as well as try some new things). After six years of Shazam, I’m done with superheroes for now.”

Sandberg assures fans that his finished tenure with superhero films does not signal a lack of enthusiasm for the genre. “I’ve learned so much and worked with some truly amazing people. Will forever be grateful that I got to direct two of these!” He doubles down, writing, ” They’ve been very challenging but valuable experiences,” however, it appears that he intensely looks forward to “disconnecting from the superhero discourse online.”To everyone’s disappointment, the second Shazam film failed to meet expectations, grossing only $30.5 million USD during its opening weekend and receiving unfavorable ratings from viewers. Despite an excessive budget of over USD 210 million, Warner Bros. and DC Comics will likely be rewarded for their investment in the film with possible success. See for yourself what people have been saying about it through these tweets!

One thing I’ve been looking forward to is disconnecting from the superhero discourse online. A lot of that stresses me out, and it will be nice not having to think about that anymore.
