Ahmaud Arbery: JAY Z’s Team Roc Demands Justice in Open Letter

Date:

JAY-Z‘s organization TEAM ROC published an open letter to Georgia representatives in Sunday’s issue of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution seeking justice for the death of Ahmaud Arbery.

Arbery, 25, was shot and killed during a job in Brunswick, Georgia. Two months after his death, Gregory and Travis McMichael were finally arrested on murder charges and aggravated assault.

The letter was signed by major music artists including JAY Z, Alicia Keys, Meek Mill, and Yo Got. The letter calls for District Attorney Tom Durden to recuse himself, due to a conflict of interest as Gregory McMichael’s past as a police officer. The open letter also calls for a fair trial and the naming of William Bryan as an accomplice.

“He was a human being. He was also African-American which, sadly, means that he was a target. Still.”

Here’s the open letter:

“Ahmaud was a loving son, a brother and a positive role model in the community,” the letter reads. “He was a human being. He was also African-American which, sadly, means that he was a target. Still. And, on this Mother’s Day—just two days after what would have been Ahmaud’s 26th birthday—we simply cannot and will not stand for another black mother who must spend the day mourning the loss of her black son because of the color of his skin.”

In relevant entertainment news, entrepreneur Jay Z and rapper Meek Mill are making moves to protect prison inmates and staff from the Coronavirus COVID-19 with a donation of 100,000 surgical masks.

The Reform Alliance, an organization created by Meek Mill and Jay Z, was able to secure masks and give them back to the community.

Masks  will be distributed to multiple places including the following:

  • Tennessee Department of Corrections
  • Mississippi State Penitentiary
  • New York’s Riker’s Island Correctional and their medical facility.

According to The Marshall Project, the infection rate at New York City’s Riker’s Island and other prison populations have been extremely problematic due to the inability for many prisoners to distance themselves. In fact, hand sanitizer is considered contraband at many prisons since it has high levels of alcohol.
