Hollywood is Now Using Fake News Sites to Promote a Movie

Date:

Fake news has just hit Hollywood

Fake news is a huge problem. In fact, just last week Apple’s CEO Tim Cook said fake news is “killing people’s minds”. But, that is not stopping Hollywood from using it to promote a feature film.

According to a report from Buzzfeed, the marketing team behind A Cure For Wellness has teamed up with or created a network of five fake news websites that mostly shares hoaxes and lies that are unrelated about the feature film. For example, one of the reported stories includes Trump banning childhood vaccinations or Lady Gaga planning “a tribute to Muslims” during her Super Bowl performance. But in between those fake news stories about Donald Trump there are ads for a fake water company with all sorts of supposed healing powers, both of which tie into the plot of the upcoming feature film, A Cure for Wellness.

A Cure For Wellness comes from New Regency and Fox and the companies are not hiding from the fact they are peddling fake news stories. In a statement released to Buzzfeed, Regency confirmed the report saying they are “working with the fake sites” and argued A Cure for Wellness “is a movie about a “fake” cure that makes people sicker,” so they created fake wellness sites and “partnered with a fake news creator” to help promote the movie.

A Cure for Wellness is directed by Gore Verbinski and the movie hits theaters on February 17th. You can check out the trailer below.
