Egypt Bans Exodus: Gods and Kings for Being Historically “Inaccurate”

Egypt Bans “inaccurate” ‘Exodus’ feature film.

According to BBC, Egypt has banned the Hollywood film based on the book of Exodus because of what censors described as “historical inaccuracies”.

Exodus: Gods and Kings was censored by the Egyptian censorship board saying the film’s depiction of Jews as having built the Pyramids, and that an earthquake, not a miracle by Moses, caused the Red Sea to part.

It was also reported that the movie was banned in Morocco.

There have also been reports that the film is banned in Morocco.

Although the state-run Moroccan Cinema Centre (CCM) had given the film the green light, Moroccan business website Medias24.com said that officials had decided to ban the movie from being screened the day before its premiere. [via]

Exodus: Gods and Kings opened in the United States and earned $8.7 million on its opening day (including its Tuesday midnight gross $1.2 million from 2,500 theaters). The film topped the box office during its opening weekend with $24.5 million.

Exodus: Gods and Kings has received “mixed-to-negative” reviews from critics. The acting and visuals received praise, but critics criticized the pacing, thin screenwriting, lack of character development, and overall feeling of emptiness. The film has a “rotten” score of 29% on Rotten Tomatoes based on 147 reviews, with an average rating of 4.9 out of 10. The critical consensus states, “While sporadically stirring, and suitably epic in its ambitions, Exodus: Gods and Kings can’t quite live up to its classic source material.”
