The Latest on HBO Max’s the Idol

The Latest Scoop

The Weeknd’s new HBO series is undergoing some major changes. Director Amy Seimetz left the project following a creative overhaul, and reports say that Suzanna Son would not be returning either and is said to be replaced by Debby Ryan. Although they haven’t specified if any other cast members will be leaving the production, the Da Vinci Code-style drama sounds incredibly intriguing.

Sources say that The Weeknd (who co-created the show with “Euphoria”s Sam Levinson and Reza Fahim) was not happy with the direction the series was taking. He felt like they were leaning too much towards an exclusively female perspective and that his character had less space to develop (compared to when both his character’s perspective and Lily-Rose Depp’s shared equal footing in season two).  It is unclear what other changes will be made but fans can expect significant reshoots.

The new trailer for the show teasingly features Lily-Rose Depp as she faces challenges while trying to become a successful pop star. The conflict between her and The Weeknd’s character, some cult leader, grows. According to the trailer, viewers can expect sex, drugs, music, and an insider’s look into the universe that Abel Tesfaye and Sam Levinson created. The preview establishes the tone for what is to come in the series, with Abel’s character telling Depp, “Los Angeles is where all the monsters of the world congregate. Trust no one,” establishing a sinister mood. The cast includes many musicians and actors, including Troye Sivan, Jennie Ruby Jane of Blackpink, Dan Levy, Suzanne Son, Tunde Adebimpe, Hari Nef, and Nico Hiraga.

The Idol will premiere on HBO Max in 2023.

HBO Max’s ‘The Idol’ Trailer:

The Weeknd is currently on tour for his “After Hours Til Dawn” tour, and while the concerts are buzzing, HBO is now promoting his new acting venture, The Idol.

The Idol is a new drama series, which will be available on HBO Max and stars The Weeknd and Lily-Rose Depp.

The newest series has been co-created, written and executive produced by Sam Levinson, the creator of Euphoria. Last year, the show’s director Amy Seimetz said, THE IDOL, set against the backdrop of the music industry, centers on a self-help guru and leader of a modern-day cult, who develops a complicated relationship with an up-and-coming pop idol.”

The wild trailer shows the stars in a crazy lifestyle consumed by drugs, money and sex, and even describes the show as “the sleaziest love story.”

Check out the full trailer above and expect the series on HBO Max soon.

The Plot
Set against the backdrop of the music industry, Lily-Rose Depp plays an aspiring pop singer who becomes the latest in a long line of individuals who have come under the spell of a self-help guru and cult leader played by Abel Tesfaye.

The Premier

With these changes, who knows? The best bet would be sometime in 2023.

The Cast
Lily-Rose Depp has been confirmed to star as the female lead opposite The Weeknd. She plays an upcoming pop singer that falls in love with a cult leader. There is no other information about their characters or how they fit into things yet, so keep an eye out for more details when everything starts coming together!

Troye Sivan, Steve Zissis, and Juliebeth Gonzalez have been cast as series regulars. Melanie Liburd, Tunde Adebimpe, Nico Hiraga, Elizabeth Berkley Lauren, Anne Heche, Maya Eshet, Tyson Ritter, Kate Lyn Sheil, Liz Sierra, and Finley Rose Slater also joins the cast in recurring roles

The Casting Directors

There have been multiple re-castings in this series, perhaps an example of art imitating life in finding that next big star. Here are names to look out for, as they could probably be the next big thing: Bret Howe, Jessica Kelly, Mary Vernieu, Carmen Cuba, and Jennifer Venditti.
