Margot Robbie Reveals She Initially Wanted To Cast Gal Gadot as Barbie

Margot Robbie’s Vision for Barbie: Gal Gadot Considered for the Role

In a recent interview with Vogue, Margot Robbie, the lead actress and executive producer of the upcoming Barbie, shared her insights on the portrayal of the iconic doll and her initial choice for the role. Robbie expressed her concerns about the longstanding issue of Barbie’s sexualization.

Robbie questioned the necessity of sexualizing a plastic doll devoid of reproductive organs, emphasizing that Barbie’s lack of physical anatomy should nullify any notions of sexual desire. She firmly stated, “While Barbie is often portrayed in a sexualized manner, it is crucial to remember that she should never be reduced to being merely sexy. People might impose their ideas of sexuality onto her, but her wardrobe choices, like a short skirt, should be attributed to fun and vibrancy rather than an invitation for objectification.”

Interestingly, Robbie disclosed that she had envisioned Gal Gadot as the ideal embodiment of Barbie’s energy. She lauded Gadot’s incomparable beauty yet commended her genuine sincerity and enthusiastic kindness, which gave her a relatable and endearing quality. Robbie noted that Gadot’s charismatic presence was reminiscent of someone who exuded a charming quirkiness just before tipping into the realm of being a dork.

Robbie assumes the lead role of Barbie in the film while also taking on the part of executive producer. Joining her in the cast are Ryan Gosling as Ken, along with America Ferrera, Kate McKinnon, Simu Liu, Will Ferrell, Ariana Greenblatt, Emma Mackey, Alexandra Shipp, Issa Rae, Michael Cera, Hari Nef, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Rhea Perlman, Ncuti Gatwa, Emerald Fennell, Sharon Rooney, Scott Evans, Ana Cruz Kayne, Connor Swindells, Ritu Arya, Jamie Demetriou, and Marisa Abela.

Barbie is set to hit theaters on July 21, offering audiences a fresh perspective on the beloved doll and her world.
