Marian's aunts are members of The Women's League, which is fighting for the right to vote, and they introduce her to their friend Delphine Beaumond (Carrie Coon), an woman who has made a fortune in the garment industry. Together, they all explore the thrilling and sometimes dangerous world of New York City in the 1880s.

The series also stars Matt Letscher as Henry Russell, the head of the family that employs Peggy; James Cromwell as Samuel van Rhijn, Agnes and Ada's tyrannical father; and David Strathairn as Bishop Henry Potter.
