Elizabeth Olsen Offers Advice for New MCU Actors: Sign Short-Term Contracts

Elizabeth Olsen, renowned for her role as Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch in Disney’s Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), recently shared valuable insights for aspiring actors eager to enter the enchanting world of Marvel. In an interview with Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Olsen recommended that newcomers consider signing on for just one Marvel project. This approach, she explained, allows actors to gain more “creative control” over their characters in subsequent ventures.

When asked if actors seek her guidance regarding joining the MCU, Olsen responded, “I’ve had some people ask about it.” Her response typically consists of advising them to commit to a single film. By doing so, actors can establish a stronger foundation of creative influence. Olsen elaborated, stating, “That way you have more control over… If you, let’s say, ‘Oh my God, this is the most fun I’ve ever had and I love this character so much, I want to do it again,’ you now have more creative control for the next one.” With a playful remark, she added, “Don’t tell [David] Galluzi that. [He’s] business affairs at Marvel.”

Since 2014, Olsen has portrayed Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch, not only in her standalone series, WandaVision, but also in various Marvel projects, including Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, two Captain America films, and the last three Avengers movies. Despite her successful tenure within the MCU, Olsen has expressed frustrations regarding the constraints of her contractual obligations, which have limited her participation in independent film endeavors. Currently, a WandaVision spinoff featuring Kathryn Hahn is also in development.
