How to Become a Professional Dancer

Date:

Want to become a professional dancer? Here’s how to break into the industry.

Before Channing Tatum was a house hold name, he worked on the dance movie Step Up. Needless to say, it launched his career and presumably brought forth the Magic Mike franchises.

But, have you ever wanted to become a choreographer or dance in the music, film or TV industry? Well we spoke with Brittany Cratit about her experience in the entertainment industry and working as a dancer in Miami, Florida. Trained in ballet, pointe, jazz, acrobatics, contemporary/ lyrical, and hip hop, Cratit has been dancing for 21 years teaching at competitive dance studios.
But, she says her working as a dancer or choreographer is tough. “Being a dancer and a choreographer are two completely different things. Growing up being a dancer I was always under the direction of an instructor and was told what to do. I’ve trained with dozens of experienced teachers and professors and wouldn’t be the woman I am today without them. Being a dance student takes a lot of discipline, determination, poise, confidence, etc. dance requires a lot of training and extra rehearsals. On an average I would train 15+ hours a week during the school week and danced at school as well.”

Cratit also explained how to break into the industry as a dancer. “Hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard. Don’t be afraid to try new styles and master more than one, because in the end the versatile dancer that can do everything will get picked for a job before the dancer who can only dance one style. Take as many classes as you can and don’t be afraid to dance outside your comfort zone; You can’t improve that way. Take risks and trust in them. For choreographers.. Stay hungry and believe in your work. It’s ok to look up to other choreographers for inspiration, but never copy; believe in yourself.”

Overall, she says: “Dare to be different and try new things to make you stand out from others. Lastly, for both dancers and choreographers… Make sure that you’re always having fun and enjoying what you do”
