Sony Does Not Shuts Down Filming After Hackers Stop Payments

Date:

Update (Sunday, December 14): Filming is not Shut Down.

According to Deadline, Production for several Sony Pictures is still on-going.

Despite a spate of reports to the contrary, Sony Pictures has not shut down production of all its films because of the hack attack that has shaken the film division to its core. The James Bond film Spectre is shooting in the UK; the untitled Peter Landesman-directed film about football concussions that stars Will Smith is shooting in Pittsburgh, and YA novel adaptation The Fifth Wave,  about an alien invasion, is shooting in Atlanta.

Sony Pictures stops filming after hackers, Guardians of Peace, shut down the payment system Sony uses for their movies.

The Hollywood studio that made the James Bond and Spider-Man films has stopped filming after hackers shut down their computer network, and leaked several films and thousands of documents.

According to reports, Sony Pictures have cancelled shots because the problems have left the movie studio unable to process payments.

Sony Pictures also postponed a press conferenced scheduled for today for The Wedding Ringer, a new romantic comedy starring Kevin Hart. Kevin Hart was called a “Whore” by a Sony executive in an email leaked by the hackers this week. The executive was complaining to a coworker that Kevin Hart asked for more money in order to promote the movie. “I’m not saying he’s a whore, but he’s a whore,” he wrote.

The attack on Sony Pictures started on November 24th when Sony Pictures received a red skeleton like image on their staff computers alongside a warning that data would be released to the web unless its demands were met. The hackers then leaked four movies online including Annie, Mr. Turner and Fury. The hacking group, Guardians of Peace have released internal company documents every few days for the past two weeks. The first contained a document listing salaries and bonuses of Sony Pictures staff. This week, emails have forced two senior Hollywood producers to issue apologies.

In an email to Amy Pascal, the co-chairman of Sony Pictures, Scott Rudin, who made Moneyball and No Country for Old Men, described Angelina Jolie as a “minimally talented spoilt brat” who possessed a “rampaging ego”.

Earlier this week, James Bond movie script leaked online.

According to emails leaked in the Sony hack, the new James Bond movie, Spectre, which began filming this week, will likely clock in among the most expensive movies ever made, with a current projected budget “in the mid $300Ms.” Why? Possibly because the script—which leaked in full alongside copious, desperate notes to improve it—features a messy third act that executives are still trying to rework after months of tweaking.

The attack by Guardians of Peace, a hacking collective suspected of having links with North Korea, has taken most of Sony Pictures’ computers offline. North Korea has been linked to the hack because Sony’s forthcoming film The Interview involves a CIA plot to kill Kim Jong Un, the supreme leader.

Joseph Demarest, the assistant director of the FBI’s cyber-division, told a US Senate hearing that methods used by the hackers would have breached the defences of nine out of ten companies.
