The news was announced to Mic on Friday afternoon and was reportedly planned to coincide with what would have been Trayvon Martin’s 21st birthday. Martin was shot to death on February 26, 2012 by George Zimmerman. Zimmerman was later acquitted by a Florida jury.

The New World Foundation will distribute Tidal’s donations to Black Lives Matter and a list of other civil rights groups including Million Hoodies, Hands Up United, NY Justice League, the Oscar Grant Foundation and the Trayvon Martin Foundation.

It is important to note that this is not the first time that Jay Z has supported the Black LIves Matter movement. Beyoncé and Jay Z reportedly gave anonymous donations in the thousands of dollars to bail out protesters in Ferguson and Baltimore.

Typically, Jay Z and his wife are low-key in their activism, showing at events and meeting the families of victims of police brutality.
