‘Game of Thrones’ Actor Reveals What It’s Like to Get Killed Off and It’s Horrible

Sunday’s ‘Game of Thrones’ killed off Daenerys’ trusted after he was overwhelmed by a gang of insurgents in Meereen. The scene showed Ser Barristan Selmy (Ian McElhinney) but it also marked the exit of a kind and noble character in the series.

Ser Barristan had a major role in the ‘Game of Thrones’ series and his death also represents another departure from the orginal book series, where Ser Barristan is still alive.

While it may be a great feeling to be a cast member on ‘Game of Thrones’ but, getting killed off is horrible. In a recent interview with EW, Ian McElhinney explains what it was like to get written off the show and it’s pretty damn depressing.

How did you find out?
It proves you should probably not read the books. I’ve read the books. So I thought this season I was going to have more to do, and I was really looking forward to that. And then I got my dates from my agent and I thought, ‘That doesn’t tally.’ Because there was no way if they were sticking to the books that I should be in for that number of weeks. It seemed to me they must be writing me out. So I had a word with the line producer and said, “Can you corroborate that they’re writing me out?” Then the [showrunners] rang me and told me, ‘Your time is up in this series.’ So perhaps I took them by surprise that I knew.

In comparison, on ‘The Walking Dead’ producers call the actors and let them know kindly and on their final day of filming, cast and crew hold a “last dinner” for the actors. It sounds like getting killed off on ‘Game of Thrones’ is just as brutal as the fight scenes themselves.
