Mid-spring marks the time of year when shows at risk shows must sweat out their fates — sometimes right up until networks announce their fall schedules to advertisers at their upfront presentations to advertisers. Optimism has its place in Hollywood, but it ranks somewhere between actual advertising money and the feel-good awards that can sometimes keep low-rated shows alive.

Typically top-performing shows from each broadcast network have already received another season, and shows that had terrible ratings are either immediately cancelled or left “on the bubble.” The future of a TV show depends on a lot of factors including reviews, social media influence, and whether or not a TV network has another show to replace it. But, as TheWrap points out “it’s half science, half crapshoot” trying to predict what’s going to happen next.
