Does Atlanta’s Film Industry Have a Carjacking Problem?

It seems as though the rise of carjackings in Atlanta is now affecting Georgia’s growing film industry.

Shortly after 9:00pm on December 20th at a Shell Gas station on Fulton Industrial Boulevard, Queen Latifah’s Mercedes-Benz was car jacked. According to the AJC, police were on the look out for the person who hopped into Queen Latifah’s car as her associate, Keith Sheppard, was pumping gas.

Queen Latifah is currently in Atlanta filming her new FOX TV series STAR. Luckily, Latifah was not in the car at the time of the carjacking.

Police officers were later able to find the vehicle at a Mechanicsville apartment complex off of McDaniel Street in Atlanta. According to the Fulton County police report, someone left behind lemonade and fruit punch bottles inside the car.

Carjackings in Atlanta is becoming more common in Atlanta. Martin Arrington Sr, a longtime judicial and political figure was a victim of a carjacking just last week. The current Fulton Commissioner,  Marvin Arrington Jr., responded by saying people are “under attack”.

Then in October, a father was shot and killed during an attempted carjacking in Atlanta. 44-year-old Kenneth Oglesby was shot and killed during an attempted carjacking at 1:30pm Thursday afternoon in Atlanta.

Georgia’s filming industry targeted?

Meanwhile, over 30 movies and TV shows are filming throughout the Atlanta, Georgia area and Atlanta criminals know it. In 2015, criminals robbed an Atlanta movie prop rental company. Three men bashed the doors of Hands on Props, Alpha Studio Rental and Georgia Film Art and stole electronics, televisions and fake weapons. In addition, a Fox’s Sleepy Hollow security guard was kidnapped and sexually assaulted.
