Box Office: ‘The Night Before’ and ‘Secret in Their Eyes’ Flop

Date:

Seth Rogen’s Night Before and Julia Roberts supposed comeback movie, Secret in Their Eyes,  a box office flop

Secret In Their Eyes is written and directed by Billy Ray, and based on the 2005 novel The Question in their Eyes written by Argentinian author Eduardo Sacheri.

The movie stars Chiwetel Ejiofor, Nicole Kidman, Julia Roberts, Dean Norris and Michael Kelly.

The movie centers around a team of FBI investigators who are torn apart when they discover Jess (Julia Roberts) daughter has been brutally murdered. They are able to arrest a suspect, however he is an informant for the government and he is let go and the evidence is destroyed.

Secret in their Eyes received mixed reviews from critics. On Rotten Tomatoes, the movie had a rating of 42% with the site’s critical consensus saying: “Secret in Their Eyes wastes its incredible cast on a remake that fails to improve upon – or even make a compelling case for its own existence in addition to – the remarkable original.”

But, the worst part of all is that the movie bombed in the box office. According to reports, Secret in their Eyes made only $6.63 million in the United States and only $443,000 around the world, against a movie budget of 19.5 million dollars.

Analysts argue that because the movie opened alongside The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 and The Night Before it was never expected to be a box office hit movie. But, the movie made $3 million less than expectations.

But Julia Roberts was not alone. The Night Before tanked in the box office.

The 2015 Christmas comedy  directed by Jonathan Levine written by Levine, Evan Goldberg, Kyle Hunter, and Ariel Shaffir, and produced by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg opened way less than expecatations.

The movie stars Seth Rogen, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Anthony Mackie and centers around the reunion of three childhood friends on Christmas Eve. But,, because Isaac (Rogen) is going to be a father and Chris (Anthony Mackie) has become famous, all three decide to have one last Christmas Eve out in New York City.

The Night Before had mixed reviews just like Secret in their Eyes. On Rotten Tomatoes, the movie had a 63% rating with a critical consesus saying, “”The Night Before provokes enough belly laughs to qualify as a worthwhile addition to the list of Christmas comedies worth revisiting, even if it isn’t quite as consistent as the classics.”

But, the movie tanked in the box office earning $10.1 million, way below expectations and finishing fourth at the box office behind Mockingjay Part 2, Spectre, and The Peanuts Movie.
