Believe it or not, there is a current casting call for another big screen version of “The Little Rascals”. That’s right!

Universal has greenlighted a big screen version of Hal Roach’s classic Depression era kids series. Newly coined director Alex Zamm, who has a long resume of feature films, and producer Mike Elliot, are scheduled to be in charge.

This time around, when their beloved adopted Grandma is about to lose her bakery to a bunch of sneaky millionaires, the Little Rascals try to raise the money to help. Using their outrageous schemes masterminded by Spanky, resulting in a comical disaster. Their last hope is performing on a TV talent show, but the kids are up against an ensemble of glitzy competition, and their ragtag band has an uphill battle in order to save their grandmother’s bakery. Hopefully, they will win the big cash prize! The Little Rascals was a TV series in the 1950s when televisions first appeared. It is no lie that anyone over 50 may have nostalgic memories for Spanky, Buckwheat and friend.

Calling “The Little Rascals” “a TV series from the 1950s” is somewhat inaccurate. The “Little Rascals” TV series from the 1950s was made up of all previously produced material. It featured TV syndication versions of 89 of the older “Our Gang” comedies; the specific entries in the “Little Rascals” package were made between 1929 and 1938. In total, “Our Gang” was in production from 1922 to 1944; no new “Little Rascals” live-action TV productions were produced in the 1950s, or, save for 1980s TV commercials and unsold pilots, thereafter.

The fact that the short were actually made in and set in the 1930s (during the Great Depression) should help any prospective parents and kids looking to audition to get the right style and understand the tone of the films.
