The Playas.

Kamal,

African American, 19/20 years old. Had a rough life, a dark past, carries a dark secret. A shadow he’s desperately wants to come from under. No saint, but smart. Good with computers and tech stuff. Goes to Community College and has dreams of going anywhere except for where he is. He’s a loner a bit embarrassed by his past, walks with a bit of a chip on his shoulder.  Wants to do the right thing, but only knows the wrong ways to do it. A strong emotional arc.

Moni,

20, beautiful. Prostitute. Been a prostitute since she was 15. Thinks no one loves her or cares. She’s calculating. She acts out and is irrational. Very needy. Despite what she been through. She never stopped dreaming. Wants something more, but don’t know what it is. Desperately wants to be loved. A lot of spunk when she needs it. A complicated past. Love interest of Kamal. Strong emotional arc.

Styles, Aka DoDhat

African American, A Midwestern pimp, late 40’s early 50’s, who holds down the track on blvd on the other side of town. Street savvy, colorful language. God like complex, takes no responsibilities for his actions. Clever with a keen sense of style. Takes pimping very seriously. An emotional arc, comedic timing needed.

Mr. Siad.

Indian, Owner of the Motel, Kamal lives. Hard-nosed, a bit of a father figure to Kamal. Knows about Kamal’s past. A bit seedy.

Deon.

African American, Kamal’s hot headed friend. Deon represents everything Kamal is trying to run from. Deon loves the streets, drugs, being unemployed and the ladies. He constantly comes up with schemes and drags Kamal into it. He sees Kamal as family and is very loyal, even if it means taking it to the streets.

Det. Saans.

Head of cyber crimes unit.  She’s an over achiever, trying to get ahead. Using Kamal for that objective. No family, work is her life. Beautiful, a risk taker and hard nosed.

Big Al.

Styles muscle.  Big broodish, minion type. Does what styles says when he says it.

Jesse

Kamal’s boss at the tattoo parlor. A bit thuggish, selfish and cheap.  His business comes first.

Alex.

Kamal’s old high school friend, college student at Eastern Michigan. Level headed, goal oriented. 20 years old.
